1. Azores, Portugal
Best Destination if you … are looking for a unique, unexplored and unspoiled nature destination.
Somewhere between Lisbon and New York, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, lies the Azores, an archipelago formed of nine volcanic islands, each with its own individual charm.
Practically, you are still on European land, but the landscape reminisces of an exotic place, untouched by humans’ hands, bursting with natural beauty, striking views, mysterious caverns, secret waterfalls, and hot spring natural pools. The lands of the Azores are blessed with unique grapes that grow under the shadow of the once eruptive volcano of Pico Island, so as you have a great reason to celebrate, you’ll also need a great wine to toast, right? – while obviously catching a beautiful sunset and observing the whales evening dance.
The Azoreans promote a very relaxed pace of life, so everything runs very smoothly on the island complex, making it perfect for those who are up for an adventure but want to relax at the same time.
The Azores enjoy a mild, breezy climate, with daytime temperatures rarely dipping below 14°C in winter or rising above 25°C in July, making them a good choice for any time of the year!
Best Destination if you … are not looking for the “cliché” summer resort honeymoon.
As peaceful as it can get, the southernmost continent of the Earth, with its snowy landscapes, white glaciers, and abundance of wildlife, is the perfect honeymoon destination for those who are really looking to escape the ordinary and disconnect from the rest of the world.
There are no hotels, restaurants, or shops anywhere around, only a few expensive luxury camps, or alternatively, you could board a cruise. An Antarctica honeymoon does require a considerable budget and there is a lot of planning to do in advance, but trust us, it will be an unforgettable experience. Kayak with humpback whales, cruise between enormous icebergs, climb one of the world’s seven highest summits, observe wild animals such as penguins, seals, orcas, and albatross in their natural habitat—and you can even hang out with them!
To visit Antarctica, you must go during the Antarctic “summer”, which starts in March and extends to November. During this period, the wildlife can be observed at its maximum while offering 24 hours of daylight.
Best Destination if you … are looking for an exotic and full of culture destination.
Located in the Indian Ocean Island, off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar is a unique destination that combines tropical landscapes, rich history and culture, paradisiac beaches, and luxurious resorts. Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar, is a picturesque town on the west coast of the island. This capital is a unique monument to the mix of cultures of Arab, East African, Indian, Persian, and European conquerors, traders, and seafarers.
If you have never been snorkelling in your life, then Zanzibar is the place! It is a must to discover the underwater world of this utopia. Other must-do activities include kayaking, kitesurfing, monkey spotting and feeding, in any of its rich forests.
Calling all the foodies: Zanzibar is also a top destination for those who like to explore different cuisines, as its cuisine includes a lot of exotic fruits and spices and is quite exquisite.
The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October, when the weather is dry and temperatures range between 28 and 34 degrees Celsius.
4.Fernando de Noronha, Brazil
Best Destination if you … are looking for swimsuit-clad days on tropical beaches, exciting, exotic scenery, and long, jungle hikes.
Fernando de Noronha is a volcanic archipelago off the north-eastern coast of Brazil and not surprisingly, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a delicate ecosystem. “Given that this tiny island is one of the most well-preserved civilizations in the world there is certainly an exclusive feel, visitor access is restricted to about 450 people per day!
The vibe is peaceful, the pace of life is relaxed, and there are no big resorts or loud bars. As for the landscape and the views, there are not enough words to describe the beauty of this island. Spend your days hiking, scuba-diving with dolphins, turtles, and sharks, boat-hopping, or just lying in the golden sun while soaking under the Brazilian sun. During the evenings, you can catch one of the most beautiful sunsets. As the island is isolated, the skies are clear, so you can admire the pinkest and orange sunset colours you have ever seen.
Compared to other destinations, this one is a year-round destination as during the winter season in this part of Brazil, the temperature does not drop below 20 degrees.
5. Ikaria, Greece
The best destination if … you want to disconnect from everyone and everything.
In the northeast Aegean Sea, Ikaria Island is one of the five blue zones in the world. Ikaria is a unique, purely natural, and pristine island. The island is world-famous for the long life of its inhabitants, who eat and drink only local products (spoiler alert: the local cuisine is mouth-watering). With 102 km of coastline, there is no doubt that the island’s main attractions are its paradisiac beaches, of all different types: pebbly, sandy, organised, under a cave – but what they all have in common is their crystal-clear waters. There is even a beach named Seychelles, after the exotic islands in the Indian Ocean.
Ikaria is the ideal honeymoon destination for those newlyweds who are looking to escape from the world, as there are so many off-the-beaten-track and isolated spots that it is hardly possible to be near any other soul. However, everything is very simple on this island – there are no luxury hotels, restaurants, or bars. Instead, you can stay in cosy apartments featuring blue views, dine in authentic taverns and drink local wine at sea-side bars.
Temperatures are great all summer, but we would definitely recommend avoiding the first two weeks of August.
6. Cinque Terre, Italy
The best destination if … you want a honeymoon in Italy and want to avoid touristy vibes.
Cinque Terre is a stunning and iconic Italian destination located in the remote coastal region of Liguria, Northern Italy. Often compared and confused with the Amalfi Coast, one of the beauties of Cinque Terre is that it is less crowded, prices are reasonable, and businesses have stayed local. The setting is extraordinarily romantic, pastel-coloured buildings, rich greenery, blossomed trees, cobbled streets, atmospheric bars, and rocky beaches showered by turquoise waters.
Cinque Terre, which translates as “Five Lands,” refers to the five charming, historical, and colourful hillside towns linked by a railway line or hiking trails. These cosy villages are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you and your partner are foodies, Cinque Terre is definitely your ideal honeymoon destination, as the area is the birthplace of pesto sauce, focaccia bread, and limoncello—and also home to the best seafood in Italy!
Cinque Terre is another honeymoon destination ideal for the Italian summer, hence the ideal time to visit is from late April to early October.
7. Cambodian Islands
Best Destination if you … are looking for an exotic, adventurous but low-budget destination.
Dip into culture and history in one of Asia’s most enchanting countries, Cambodia. Blessed with a rich heritage, Cambodia is home to over 4000 ancient temples and the largest religious monument built in the world, Angkor Wat, dating back to the 12th century.
Cambodia’s jungles are some of the most well-preserved in the world, which is home to a variety of wildlife and, the most exciting part – elephant sanctuaries! Either you are looking to hike and embark on cultural adventures or just soak up the sun on pristine beaches and enjoy massages all day, Cambodia is the place for you.
But let’s talk romance. Cambodia is home to some of the most beautiful islands in Southeast Asia, like Koh Rong Well, Koh Russei (Bamboo Island), and Koh Rong Samloem, to name a few. Chek in with your other half in a boutique hotel on a remote island, featuring a private jacuzzi decorated with colourful flowers, eating fresh local fruit and catching magical sunsets for less than $50 per stay—we told you it is cheap! Do not pass up renting a moped and doing some self-exploration, wandering in traditional street markets and trying some interesting food options—like a tarantula!
Although all year round, the country features warm weather, it is suggested to avoid the south-westerly monsoon from May to October as it gets very rainy, windy, and humid.
